Editor’s note: Today we are honored to introduce guest blogger Jose Luis Serrato, head of Operations in Region Latin America and Caribbean as well as President of Ericsson Mexico. He’s on his way to the World Economic Forum on Latin America as a delegate and submits a few thoughts here:
I’ve been an Ericsson employee for 30 years and counting. And still, every day brings something new. This week I am on the Yucatan Peninsula, usually a place for beachwear and vacationing, but now for a suit and tie and some really exciting conversations with people who want to improve the world.
As a Mexican, I’m proud that the World Economic Forum on Latin America is coming to my home country for the second time in a 10-year span. Mexico is changing before our eyes – we are undergoing changes in education, energy, financial and telecommunications structures and governance systems. It’s the perfect backdrop to talk about the Networked Society and how quickly this is becoming reality here and around the world. Mexico is also the perfect backdrop for discussions about renewing investments and transformation in Latin America.
As an Ericsson representative, I think our role is incredibly important in these conversations. I will be listening, learning, taking in new perspectives as well as matching our expertise to gaps where they are needed. In particular I’m looking forward to the sessions on Digital Transformation, the Future of Telecoms in Latin America, and the New Urban Realities. Our sustainability work across all of these areas comes into Mexico, primarily with the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative in Tijuana and Chiapas, where we connect schools and encourage young people to develop conflict-resolution skills.
That’s only one of our sustainability projects region-wide. We work with the National Association of Banks in Peru for financial inclusion, among others. These issues are hugely important in big cities, and we know that the connections between students and residents in different parts of the world broadens horizons, perspectives, and revitalizes a community. All of these themes fit right in to what I’ll be participating in next week.
My colleague John Yazlle is with me, and it’s his turn next time to let you know how things go in Cancun. Hasta luego!
