I’m in New York this week in conjunction with the UN Summit on Sustainable Development. The Summit, which begins today, is the point in time when 193 world leaders will adopt the Global Goals, a series of 17 ambitious goals to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice and tackle climate change for everyone by 2030.
And while I’m here the Global Goals are all anyone is talking about. I’ve been on the ground than 48 hours and have already been inspired by a host of leaders like Professor Johan Rockström on the interdependency of climate change on the Goals; Deputy Secretary General of the UN Jan Eliasson talking about children’s rights in the development context; Graca Machel talking about how a society that focuses on women and girls can transform; and the Pope talking about peace and justice as essential to sustainable development.
So being in this environment, it’s hard to remember that most people on the planet have never heard about the goals. But this is about to change.
As part of a consolidated effort across a broad range of partners, the goals are about to become famous. The campaign starts on Saturday at the Global Citizen Festival on the Great Lawn in Central Park – and it has an ambitious aim – #TellEveryone – to reach 7 billion people in 7 days. The concert is one way to get attention for the goals, with 60,000 people attending live and millions more watching the broadcast.
Many of the world’s largest mobile operators like Vodafone, Verizon, Telefonica, BhartiAirtel and NTT Docomo, Telstra, Axiata and Ooredoo, will spread the message about the goals to over 5 billion of their customers in 125 countries around the world. In fact, our CEO, Hans Vestberg will be on stage at the concert to kick off this effort – it will be the world’s largest partnership of mobile network operators sending text messages.
He was on hand with many of the other partners to announce the campaign earlier today. He remarked on the power technology has to transform people’s livelihoods and quality of life, and how this campaign supported by so many mobile operators from around the world really demonstrated how technology can be a powerful force for good.
